This could be tied to one of the upgrades or just placed directly on the pet itself. I suggest the latter.
In effect a new stance, Ambush, which is only usable on a Tentacle if the tile allows for hiding. The stance causes the pet to spend 1 AP to Hide with its targeting preferences as per Aggressive To Non Faction. When a potential target enters the tile the pet attacks with Hide bonus for the first attack. If there are no more targets, or the target moves away, the pet will spend 1 AP to Hide again.

I do like it but I do loath the idea of someone being insta-splatted by ~10 or so hidden tentacles. At least with portal traps you have the chance to move off before it triggers once you see them.
