Stepping of the Stone not drawing mana from Font if character mana is low

I tried stepping to a stone in Purgatorio while tapped into a font/leyline (tried multiple), my own mana was too low to allow but fonts/leyline had sufficient amount, but I was met with this text: The way is blocked and the path is impassable; you cannot move in this direction.

Stepping of the World Gate seemed to work as I had enough mana for that. Possibly game doesn't allow stepping even if fonts/leyline have enough mana because it's giving priority to player's MP pool instead.
