Spelltraps give drastically reduced XP

Post by Violet Ultra »

From the wiki:
Each time a spelltrap is discharged and damages a target, the character that set the spelltrap is notified (and receives XP as though s/he had made the attack).
That 100% authentic, "as though she had made the attack" XP? I have literally never gotten more than 2 XP from a spelltrap. A gripe that's particularly relevant since I'm trying to run a Nita For Archmage campaign and need all the XP I can get.

Here's just one example, from when I was doing alchemy experiments on the arcane font in the otherwise incredibly quiet Cape Bonadventure one day and along came a top-tier Conduit:
- You reach out with your heightened magical sensitivity and open yourself to the magical power reserves of Wizard's Portal Palace [Arcane], tapping into them and allowing them to flow through you. (2022-08-14 19:24:28).
- Juanita drew 10 Magic Points from Wizard's Portal Palace [Arcane]. (2022-08-14 19:26:31).
- You set up your spellgem to trigger when a valid target takes any action with the stance Aggressive to Non-Faction. (2022-08-14 19:26:31).
- Juanita drew 10 Magic Points from Wizard's Portal Palace [Arcane]. (2022-08-14 19:26:41).
- You set up your spellgem to trigger when a valid target takes any action with the stance Aggressive to Non-Faction. (2022-08-14 19:26:41).
- You search and find a Humerus. (2022-08-14 19:26:49).
- You spend considerable time working with the Humerus and your experiment goes awry! You spill the mixture on yourself and your flesh seems to harden before your eyes! You will be considered under the Golem Form effect for 5 status ticks. You are able to glean a new alchemical insight from your work, realizing that a(n) Handful of Grave Dirt is required in the creation of a Potion of Water-Breathing. (2022-08-14 19:27:27).
- Juanita drew 5 Magic Points from Wizard's Portal Palace [Arcane]. (2022-08-14 19:27:27).
- Your alchemical research efforts have caused you to gain 20 Experience Points. (2022-08-14 19:27:27).
- (2 times) You sense one of your spelltraps has been triggered. It did not however, damage its target. (2022-08-14 19:53:55).
- You sense one of your spelltraps has been triggered, dealing 9 to its target. You gain 1 XP. (2022-08-14 19:54:08).
- (2 times) Pierre-Simon Laplace drew 5 Magic Points from Wizard's Portal Palace [Arcane]. (2022-08-14 19:54:53).
(Sorry about that Pierre.) Again, this is just an example picked to show that I don't have my spellgems all set to "target mortals only, especially helpless ones" mode. The only traps I had set back then in fact were to try to protect myself in Cape Bonadventure.

Meanwhile, within the last two weeks I have seen 18 triggers: three dealt 13 damage, six dealt 9 damage, one 7 and one 5, and seven missed entirely. Of the ones that even managed to hit, they yield a single XP with the exception of the rare full 13 damage trigger, which gives a whopping 2 XP.
